Pangolin rescued and released near Coimbatore

On August 30, 2026, an Indian pangolin was rescued and returned to the wild after being discovered in a residential area of Kasthuri Naickenpalayam, near Coimbatore. Staff from the Coimbatore forest range worked alongside volunteers from the Coimbatore Wildlife Conservation Trust to carry out the operation. The animal was found unharmed and moved quickly to a nearby reserve forest, a result of the swift coordination between local conservation teams.

These unique, scaly mammals are specialized insectivores that play a vital role in their natural environment. Despite their ecological importance, pangolins are among the most heavily trafficked animals in the world, facing constant threats from illegal poaching and the loss of their habitats. The Indian pangolin is currently listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List and receives the highest level of protection under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act in India. The rescue began when a local resident spotted the pangolin in a neighborhood roughly five kilometers from the nearest forest boundary and alerted authorities. Thirumurugan emphasized the importance of quick responses in such cases to aid conservation efforts and protect wildlife.
