Ribe Community Initiative Provides Clean Water for 600 Households in Kenya

The Ribe Community Initiative (RCI) has expanded access to clean water for the residents of Ribe village in Kilifi County, Kenya. Since its founding in March 2024, the group has worked alongside county officials to install a new 4 km pipeline and a 5,000-litre storage tank. By mid-August 2026, these efforts have brought a reliable supply of drinking water to roughly 600 households, reaching about 3,000 residents and improving their daily lives.

The project meets an essential need by cutting the time residents used to spend gathering water. Before the pipeline was built, families often traveled long distances to find a supply, a chore that disrupted their routines and limited their livelihoods. With the infrastructure now functioning, water is much easier to reach, supporting better health and general well-being across the community.

Support for the project comes from the Swahili Coast Community Foundations Initiative, which helped involve local residents in the planning process. This partnership allowed the community to take an active part in developing their own water system, making sure the final design reflected their specific needs and local knowledge.

Beyond the immediate arrival of clean water, the project marks a shift in the development of the area. The county government has set aside Ksh55 million in its 2026 budget to fund more boreholes and further infrastructure projects. This funding suggests a steady focus on solving water scarcity and raising the standard of living throughout the region.

The progress made by the Ribe Community Initiative offers a practical example for other areas dealing with water shortages. By focusing on local involvement and sustainable methods, the project provides essential resources while giving residents a stake in the results. As infrastructure continues to grow in Ribe, it may encourage other communities across Kenya and elsewhere to start their own projects to improve local conditions.
