Ribe Village in Kenya Gains Access to Piped Water for 3,000 Residents

In the village of Ribe, located in Kilifi County, the Ribe Community Initiative (RCI) has brought residents and local government together to install vital water infrastructure. This collaboration has resulted in reliable access to piped water for approximately 3,000 residents through a new 4-kilometer pipeline and a 5,000-litre water tank connected to the main Mombasa supply line. The project addresses a history of water scarcity in the area, particularly during droughts, and has changed the daily lives of local households.

Before these upgrades, residents of Ribe struggled with very limited access to clean water. Many households faced constant shortages and were forced to walk long distances to fetch water from remote sources, a task that was both exhausting and time-consuming. The introduction of piped water has removed these difficulties, allowing families to reach clean water with ease. This change has improved daily living conditions and helped restore a sense of dignity to families who had previously faced such significant hardships.

The Ribe Community Initiative was established in March 2024 under the Swahili Coast Community Foundations Initiative. It was formed to address local needs through collective action, and the success of this water project shows how community engagement and government cooperation can improve public health. The RCI has also secured Ksh55 million (~£316,000) in the 2026 county budget for further infrastructure, which will include 4 new boreholes, 2 water pans, and a larger storage tank.

By securing the necessary funding and resources, the RCI has demonstrated how community-led efforts can solve pressing local challenges. These improvements to the water system provide immediate relief and create a foundation for the future development of the region. Access to clean water is a basic necessity that supports better health and the general well-being of the community.

Moving forward, the Ribe Community Initiative plans to continue its work on water access and other local priorities.
