Special Olympics Partners for Inclusive Medical Fitness Programs
On 1 September 2026, Special Olympics and the Medical Fitness Association launched a two-year partnership to improve health outcomes for individuals with intellectual disabilities through inclusive fitness programs.

On September 1, 2026, Special Olympics International announced a partnership with the Medical Fitness Association (MFA) aimed at promoting inclusive medical fitness programs for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). This two-year collaboration focuses on enhancing health outcomes and accessibility in fitness settings, providing valuable resources and educational materials for exercise and health professionals. By equipping these professionals with the necessary tools, the partnership seeks to create safe and effective physical activity programs for individuals with IDD throughout their lives.
The initiative was marked by a pop-up event hosted by the Northwestern Medicine Huntley Health & Fitness facility, a certified Medical Fitness Association site. The event showcased the Inclusive Movement program, which has successfully engaged over 85 participants with varying abilities in a dynamic fitness environment. This program, recognized with MFA’s “Program Innovation Award” in 2025, exemplifies the potential of inclusive fitness initiatives to foster health and well-being among individuals with IDD.
Inclusive Movement began as a single weekly session and has grown into a comprehensive program offering eight sessions each week. The classes focus on cardiovascular, strength, and mobility exercises tailored to each participant's abilities. Feedback from families and caregivers has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting improvements in participants’ physical health, confidence, and social connections. The program has created a supportive environment where individuals feel seen and celebrated.
The partnership between Special Olympics and MFA aligns with a shared mission to enhance health and wellness for individuals with IDD. By expanding access to medical fitness facilities and increasing the capacity of fitness professionals, the collaboration aims to foster greater community engagement and inclusive health opportunities. This initiative represents a step forward in addressing the needs of a demographic that is often overlooked in traditional health and wellness programming.
Looking to the future, both organizations are committed to making inclusive fitness an integral part of lifelong health for people with IDD. The collaboration not only promotes physical health but also emphasizes the importance of social connection and community belonging. Through ongoing efforts and innovative programs, Special Olympics and MFA are working together to ensure that individuals with IDD can achieve better health outcomes and improved quality of life through inclusive fitness opportunities.
