Three Beluga Whales Relocated to SeaWorld San Diego
Three beluga whales named Xavier, Cyprus, and Jasper have successfully relocated to SeaWorld San Diego after traveling over 2,500 miles from Marineland in Canada, as part of an international rescue effort.
Three beluga whales, named Xavier, Cyprus, and Jasper, have successfully arrived at SeaWorld San Diego after completing a remarkable journey of over 2,500 miles from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Canada. This relocation is part of an ongoing international effort to rehome approximately 30 beluga whales following the closure of the Ontario marine park in 2024. SeaWorld describes the initiative as “an unprecedented international whale rescue effort,” aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of these marine mammals.
The closure of Marineland prompted a race against time to find suitable homes for the beluga whales that lived there. SeaWorld, along with various aquariums and marine parks worldwide, has been working diligently to create a plan for the safe relocation of these animals. The three belugas were transported to California on a Qatar Airways Boeing 777 cargo plane, with careful consideration given to their health and social bonds throughout the process. SeaWorld's chief zoological officer, Dr. Chris Dold, emphasized the importance of understanding the whales' overall health and social dynamics in developing the relocation plan.
Upon their arrival in San Diego, the three belugas joined existing residents at SeaWorld, including others previously transported from Marineland. The transition for the new arrivals is being closely monitored by the SeaWorld team, who are dedicated to providing individualized care and support during this adjustment period. Steve Aibel, SeaWorld San Antonio’s vice president for animals and conservation, highlighted that while the arrival of the belugas is a significant milestone, it is just the beginning of their journey toward acclimatization in their new environment.
The relocation of these beluga whales carries broader implications for conservation and animal welfare. By successfully relocating these animals to suitable facilities, SeaWorld and its partners are contributing to the preservation of beluga populations and enhancing public awareness about the challenges faced by marine mammals in captivity.
