Tian Rui, a 39-year-old former courier from Hubei Province, China, has dedicated himself to helping elderly residents reconnect with their adult children who work abroad. With an estimated 110 million Chinese living and working outside the country, many families face emotional challenges, particularly the elderly left behind. Tian has made over 200 trips to remote villages, serving as a bridge between these seniors and their estranged offspring. His work involves using social media and delivery services to facilitate video calls and message exchanges, allowing families to maintain connections despite the physical distance.

Having previously worked as a courier in the mountainous regions of Yichang, Tian developed personal relationships with many residents. Last year, he decided to offer a new service, acting as a middleman for families. His trips often involve delivering groceries, medications, or simply providing companionship to the elderly. Tian shared that what seniors truly desire is to know their children are thinking of them and to have someone to converse with. He even engages in video recordings of his visits, which he sends to the relatives of those he visits, ensuring families are kept in touch.

One poignant example occurred last December when Tian visited an elderly man, spending several hours with him before capturing their time together on video. Tragically, this would be the last time the family saw their relative, as he passed away just four months later. Tian’s visits also highlight the remarkable longevity of rural Chinese, as seen in his interactions with a 100-year-old woman who shared stories about her numerous grandchildren and insisted he stay for dinner. Many seniors express feelings of loneliness and isolation, frequently asking when he will return for another visit.

Tian's work has gained attention on social media, where stories of his compassionate efforts have gone viral.
