Bodhan AI Launches Four Foundational AI Models for Indian Languages

Bodhan AI, the Centre of Excellence in AI for Education at IIT Madras, has introduced four foundational AI models tailored specifically for Indian languages. Launched on September 4, 2026, the project was developed in collaboration with the research lab AI4Bharat and received support from the Union Ministry of Education. These models are intended to improve educational resources and public services by addressing the linguistic diversity found across the country.

The models cover four primary functions: speech recognition, speech generation, machine translation, and optical character recognition. Each is built to support a wide range of Indian languages, with the speech recognition model covering 27 languages and the text-to-speech model supporting 23. By providing these as open-weight releases and through hosted APIs, Bodhan AI is making the technology available to various organizations in the education and technology sectors.

Public institutions and government partners can use these multilingual capabilities to build educational tools and service applications. Using sovereign infrastructure allows these organizations to deploy AI solutions specifically suited to the Indian context. Education technology (EdTech) companies can also integrate these tools into their products without building foundational models from scratch, which helps speed up the creation of inclusive educational resources.
