India Achieves 300 GW Non-Fossil Fuel Power Capacity Milestone

The announcement was made by Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi during the Bharat Renewable Energy Summit and Expo 2026 held in Mumbai on August 27, 2026. The progress towards this milestone is a result of concerted efforts to expand renewable energy infrastructure across the country. The government has set an ambitious target of reaching 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, and with the addition of around 17 GW of renewable energy capacity in the first four months of the current financial year, India is well on track to meet this goal. During the summit, Joshi highlighted the growing interest from global investors in India's renewable energy market, despite ongoing economic uncertainties. He noted that eight to ten countries are expected to partner with India in this sector, reflecting the international recognition of the country's potential as a renewable energy powerhouse. The government is also expanding initiatives such as the rooftop solar programme under the PM Surya Ghar scheme, which has already benefited around 19 lakh households by providing subsidies for rooftop solar installations.
