This milestone represents 60% of the national target to reach 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, according to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The expansion reflects a long-term commitment to sustainable sources, which is considered a central part of the strategy to address climate change and ensure energy security.

The growth of this capacity has followed a decade of steady development. In 2014, India's solar capacity stood at 2.8 GW, a figure that has since risen to 164.59 GW. This progress has been supported by a consistent policy framework and government initiatives, such as production-linked incentive schemes designed to strengthen the domestic manufacturing of renewable energy equipment. According to the latest figures, renewable sources now account for more than 54% of the country's total installed generation capacity, which stands at approximately 552 GW.

The rollout of these projects on the ground has involved cooperation between government agencies, private firms, and various local communities. During the 2025-26 fiscal year, the country added 55.29 GW of non-fossil capacity, including 44.6 GW from solar and 6 GW from wind. Beyond generating power, the increase in installed capacity has created jobs within the renewable sector and helped to stimulate local economies. Manufacturing capacity for solar modules has also grown significantly, rising from 2.3 GW in 2014 to more than 200 GW today as the country moves toward technological self-reliance.

The shift toward renewable energy is changing both the economic and environmental landscape of the country. Actual generation from these sources increased from 190.96 billion units in 2014-15 to 477.79 billion units in 2025-26. This transition reduces reliance on fossil fuels and lowers greenhouse gas emissions, aligning the country with international climate goals. It also offers greater energy security by reducing the economic volatility that is often associated with fossil fuel markets.

Work continues toward the 2030 goal of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity, a target that requires ongoing investment in infrastructure and new technologies. As the country moves toward this objective, its progress provides a model for other nations looking to expand their own renewable energy sectors.
