Perigus Energy Launches 81 MW Solar Farm in County Carlow, Ireland

Perigus Energy, formerly known as Ørsted onshore, has launched its first solar farm in Ireland, located at Garreenleen in County Carlow. The facility reached full commercial operation in August 2026 and has a capacity of 81 MW. This project marks an important step in Perigus Energy's commitment to renewable energy, as it will generate enough electricity to power approximately 29,000 Irish homes. The completion of the Garreenleen solar farm enhances the company’s operational capacity in Ireland, increasing it from 373 MW to 454 MW, while expanding their total capacity across Europe to 68 MW, which includes operations in the UK, Germany, and Spain.

The development of the Garreenleen solar farm began with the awarding of the contract under the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS 3) in October 2023. Construction started in June 2024, showcasing a quick progression from planning to operation in just two years. TJ Hunter, Managing Director for Ireland and the UK at Perigus Energy, emphasized the rapid delivery of the project, noting that it transforms a former greenfield site into a source of green, secure, and homegrown electricity for the Irish grid. This project highlights the potential for onshore renewable energy development in Ireland and reflects Perigus Energy’s dedication to sustainable energy solutions in the region.

The project’s implementation involved a range of stakeholders, including local authorities, environmental groups, and community members. Special attention was given to integrating biodiversity measures into the solar farm’s design. Approximately 10% of the site has been reserved for biodiversity enhancement, along with the planting of over 1.2 kilometers of native hedgerows to create ecological corridors for local wildlife. This commitment to environmental sustainability shows the company’s recognition of the importance of balancing renewable energy development with ecological preservation, ensuring that the project supports the local ecosystem.

In addition to its environmental initiatives, the Garreenleen solar farm includes a community benefit fund of around €240,000, which will be available annually during the project’s operation. This fund aims to support local initiatives and is now open for applications, reflecting Perigus Energy’s commitment to engaging with the community and contributing to local development. The solar farm not only provides renewable energy but also represents an investment in the community's future, encouraging local participation and investment in sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, Perigus Energy plans to continue expanding its renewable energy portfolio in Ireland and beyond. The company is actively working on various projects, including the proposed 740 MW One Earth solar farm in the UK, which has recently received approval from the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero. This project represents one of Perigus Energy’s largest investments in onshore renewables, with the potential to power over 200,000 homes once operational. As the company moves forward, it aims to build on the success of the Garreenleen solar farm and further contribute to the transition towards a sustainable energy future in Ireland and across Europe.
