Sagicor Foundation Awards $27.8 Million in Scholarships to Jamaican Students

Sagicor Foundation Jamaica has made a significant investment in the education of young Jamaicans by awarding a total of $27.8 million in scholarships and grants for the 2026-2027 academic year. This funding includes 44 new scholarships valued at $7.5 million and 131 scholarship renewals worth $20.3 million. The new awards are intended to support students in their pursuit of higher education, with 13 recipients receiving renewable tertiary scholarships valued at $300,000 each. The foundation's commitment to the educational advancement of youth aims to foster future leaders and professionals in Jamaica.

The selection process for the scholarships was highly competitive, with approximately 1,400 applicants showcasing strong academic performance, leadership skills, community involvement, and financial need. Christopher Zacca, president and CEO of Sagicor Group Jamaica and chairman of Sagicor Foundation Jamaica, emphasized that the recipients displayed exceptional potential in various areas. He stated, "This year’s recipients demonstrated strong academic potential, remarkable leadership qualities, and a commitment to making a positive contribution to their communities and country." Zacca reiterated the foundation's mission to improve the lives of youth through quality education.

Among the notable awardees are Jahmar Amos and Travaneek Breakenridge, recognized as Champion Boy and Champion Girl at the 2026 Jamaica Teachers’ Association (JTA)/Sagicor National Athletics Championship. The scholarships awarded include 10 one-time grants of $150,000 each and 21 secondary scholarships of $50,000, which are renewable for up to five years. To maintain their scholarships, recipients must uphold a minimum average of 3.0, ensuring that academic excellence remains a priority throughout their studies.

The broader implications of these scholarships extend beyond individual achievement. By supporting students in various fields, including arts, sciences, law, engineering, and technology, the Sagicor Foundation contributes to the overall development of Jamaica. The foundation requires scholarship recipients to complete 40 hours of volunteer service, which not only enhances their leadership skills but also deepens their commitment to community engagement.
