Smart India Hackathon 2026 Launches with 226 Problem Statements
On August 21, 2026, the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2026 was launched by AICTE Chairman Prof. Yogesh Singh, featuring 226 problem statements from 27 ministries and 12 PSUs. The initiative aims to foster innovation and entrepreneurship among students by addressing real-world challenges. Over 18 lakh students have participated since 2017, and this year includes themes ranging from space technology to healthcare.

Prof. Yogesh Singh, Chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), officially launched the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) 2026 on August 21, 2026. This marks the ninth year for the national challenge, which invites students and young innovators to tackle real-world issues. At the launch, 226 problem statements were introduced, including 172 software and 54 hardware tasks. These challenges come from a mix of government ministries, public sector undertakings (PSUs), and industry partners, all working together to encourage new technical ideas among the youth.
Since its start in 2017, the SIH has worked to foster entrepreneurship in line with the national goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Viksit Bharat. It serves as a bridge for students to connect with schools, government bodies, and private companies to build practical technology. For the 2026 edition, 27 ministries have already submitted challenges, and more than 10 others are expected to join in the next few weeks. These problems span 17 different themes, from robotics and space technology to agriculture and clean energy.
The hackathon relies on a broad network of students, teachers, officials, and industry experts. Over the years, the program has reached more than 18 lakh students from 9,406 institutions, forming over 2,44,356 teams. This includes more than 3,292 all-female teams, highlighting the effort to keep the competition inclusive. Dr. Tapasya Raghav from the Ministry of Education spoke about the need to turn creative ideas into usable tools. Similarly, Prof. Singh urged the students to look beyond the prizes and focus on solving meaningful problems.
The influence of the Smart India Hackathon goes further than the individual projects themselves, helping to build a broader culture of invention across the country. By taking on the specific difficulties faced by society and business, the program creates a space where new startups and technical progress can thrive. Beyond meeting the immediate needs of the government and industry, it also helps shape policy by showing exactly what student-led innovation can achieve in different fields.
Moving forward, the Smart India Hackathon 2026 plans to grow its reach even further. A clear schedule is in place for submitting ideas, conducting evaluations, and holding the grand finale, all aimed at increasing student involvement.
